According to interviews, it was just an idea Illumination had, and Nintendo were cool with it.
I’m surprised that they didn’t at least put Star Fox Assault on NSO for the movie’s release, but I did see the eShop page highlighting Star Fox 64.

I’d wager probably nothing, illumination probably just put him in the movie because they thought he was cool. Hopefully this will lead to renewed interest in Star Fox though, which could lead to new star fox projects
